Copper Mountain’s raucous end-of-season celebration is always one for the books. This year the jam-packed Rocky Mountain festival closes out the 2018-19 ski season (and, boy, what a season it was!) April 20 and 21 with bands, brews, the famous Red Bull Slopesoakers competition and a Retro Shred-a-Thon charity ski.
Bonus: Closing Day happens to fall on Easter, aligning the World's Largest Easter Egg Hunt with the perfect time to get some final spring runs in at Copper Mountain.
Make Sunsation your new family and friends tradition. Here’s how to navigate the event like a local.
Book a Balcony
Stay the entire weekend and don’t miss a beat. Having a landing pad for ski breaks, regroups and kiddo naps can be key to a stress-free Sunsation. Center Village offers tons of lodging options with spacious balconies overlooking the festivities. Listen to the bands, dance above the action, take in the endless mountain views and sprawl in your own space at your slopeside condo.
Get a Game Plan
Sunsation is an unforgettable weekend with lots going on. Take a gander at the schedule and make a plan. There’s plenty of time to ski, watch competitions, catch live music, belly up to the bar for a couple 10 Barrel Brewing pints (the event’s official sponsor) and go on an incredible Easter egg hunt.
Here’s the Schedule:
SATURDAY, APRIL 20
11am - 2pm: Red Bull SlopeSoakers
1 - 8pm: 10th Anniversary of the Woodward Copper Barn
3:30 - 5pm: Live Music by Andy Grammer
SUNDAY, APRIL 21
7:30 - 10am: Bunny Breakfast (ticketed event)
8:30am - 12pm: World's Largest Easter Egg Hunt
9am - 4pm: High Fives Retro Shred-a-Thon
1pm: Stein Hoisting Contest
3:30pm - 5pm: Live Music by The Struts
Sunsation is all about dancing under a sun-soaked sky to killer bands with your favorite people. The weather is out of our hands. But the music lineup is a guaranteed good time. Here’s a preview of this year’s talent.
Andy Grammer was the first male pop star in a decade to reach the Top 10 at Adult Pop Radio with “Keep Your Head Up” and “Fine By Me,” from his 2011 self-titled debut. The singer-songwriter-guitarist’s music is happy, upbeat and real, spanning a gamut of pop hits that include the quadruple platinum worldwide hit “Honey, I'm Good,” and “Good To Be Alive (Hallelujah).”
On Sunday, The Struts take the stage, bringing their special flavor of glam-rock and outrageous energy to Center Village. The four-piece England-born band has opened for icons such as The Rolling Stones, The Who and Guns N’ Roses and gained almost instant cult following with their debut Have You Heard (a 2015 EP whose lead single “Could Have Been Me” hit #1 on Spotify).
Skim, Splash, Cheer
The Red Bull SlopeSoakers pond-skimming competition is a season-closing favorite. Sign up to compete in the 8th annual contest and fly majestically across the new floating rails while trying to stay above water. Harder than it sounds. But hilarious to watch. The prizes are unbeatable, including cash, ski passes and GoPros. Wild costumes, skier and snowboarder antics and judging criteria that includes splash factor and tricks + style make this a must-see. New this year: Bigger features and larger ponds.
Celebrate Easter at Copper
The scene at Copper Mountain on Easter morning (Sunday, April 21) is a kid’s dream come true. Egg hunts are set up by age—three and under run around Center Village and adults hit the mountain in search of 12 special golden eggs (see the full schedule below for a detailed by-age breakdown). All in all, there are 65,000 eggs spread across 2,500 acres, creating the world’s largest Easter egg hunt.
Egg Hunt Schedule:
8:30am: All Ages - Golden Egg Hunt - On Mountain
10am: Ages 3 and Under - Après Alley
10:30am: Ages 4-6 - Surrounding the Climbing Wall
11am: Ages 7-11 - Surrounding West Lake
12pm: All Ages - Top of the Eagle Lift
Shred for a Cause
Join the 4th annual Retro Shred-a-Thon on Sunday and raise money for injured outdoor-sport athletes. Dig out your neon one-piece snow suits, zinc sunscreen, fanny packs, wigs, straight skis and other throw-back gear and head to the American Eagle Lift for a full day of skiing followed by an awards ceremony and after party at Jack's Bar.
