In small mountain communities, accessibility to specialized care is not always easy. Residents often have to make trips to other towns and across county lines to have access to equipment, doctors and care that might not otherwise be given at their local medical center. In the midst of a pandemic, traveling for care might put them at a greater health risk. This is certainly the case in Leadville.
Leadville is located 30 minutes up the road from Copper and is a small community in the heart of the Rockies. Leadville is home to less than 3,000 people and a strong elderly population. Due to the size of the community, access to care is limited and residents often need to traverse mountain passes to receive care that goes beyond basic appointments.
St. Vincent Hospital is Leadville’s premier medical facility offering primary care to the town’s residents. The hospital building itself has been in place since 1958, but a new facility is currently under construction in order to expand accessibility to essential care services.
Construction on the new hospital began in the summer of 2019 and is expected to be completed in March of 2021 with a planned public opening this April! The new facility, located right next door to the current location, will allow the hospital to bring back critical care services as well as equipment updates and the ability to perform surgeries when necessary.
Through Copper Mountain’s Play It Forward fund, the resort recently donated money to the hospital to help the facility purchase a brand-new CT scanner for the new hospital. The hospital’s current CT scanner is 20 years old and the equipment upgrade will allow doctors to perform more thorough brain scans on patients.
Leadville is home to many Copper and Summit County employees, and Copper Mountain is proud to support St. Vincent’s as they strive to make crucial updates to their hospital and proactively work to extend care to locals in the community.
