I live down on the plains of Denver and the signs of spring are all around. Temps have been climbing into the sixties and seventies, the trees are starting to bud and my mind is wandering to summer adventures.
I’m not quite ready to let go of winter though, and you shouldn’t be either! At Copper Mountain, we hold onto our favorite season as long as possible.
I love spring skiing: while the snow might more closely resemble peanut butter than powdered sugar and you have to keep an eagle eye out for rocks, patches of dirt and pine trees reaching through the melting snow on some of the more southerly slopes, spring skiing feels like a giant party.
The sun is out, layers get shed and fellow shredders are less focused on how many runs they can get in and more focused on having a great time.
My favorite memories of skiing as a kid are those of slushy slopes, unzipped coats flapping in the breeze and generous bartenders off-loading all their remaining dozens of packages of Fruit by the Foot to my sister and I on closing day.
My favorite place this time of year is the T-Rex Grill at the base of the Timberline Express. Classic rock is always blasting and now that the sun is showing it’s beautiful face all day long, the tiki umbrellas and ski-up bar will be in full action. It’s just as nice of a spot to grab a beer and work on your goggles tan in an Adirondack chair as it is a place to jump on a lift and get in some spring turns.
Spring also means it’s almost time for the best party of the year: Sunsation. On April 14th and 15th, we’ll close Copper Mountain out with a bang. Saturday hosts everyone’s favorite event: the Redbull Slopesoakers. Register online now to show your skills as you attempt to skim a pond on Main Vein on your board or skis. Whether or not you choose to chance a soaking, you can jam out to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones in the sun!
April 15th, closing day, brings back the Retro Shred-a-thon. Sport your retro gear and raise money for injured motion sport athletes!
What a year it’s been, Copper! All too soon, we’ll be nursing sunburns, swatting mosquitoes and cringing at our air conditioning bills while we dream of those first, precious flakes of the year. Have a great summer, shredders!
